Transmission oils

When we talk about changing a car’s oil, we usually mean engine oil, which is very important. Unfortunately, drivers often overlook the gearbox oil. Perhaps this is because the consequences of using it incorrectly aren’t noticeable on a day-to-day basis.

Gearbox oil is the most important component of the gearbox, enabling it to function properly.

Neglecting this aspect will ultimately lead to gearbox failure and high repair costs. Gearbox oil must not be chosen at random. If you are unsure which oil to choose for your gearbox, please contact us – we will help you make the right choice.

WHAT IS GEARBOX OIL?

Put simply, gearbox oil is a lubricant used in the drivetrain to reduce wear on the internal mechanisms. It has a strong sulphuric odour and is usually a hypoid oil, which, thanks to its high-pressure additives, can operate under extreme conditions.

Gearbox oil has a higher viscosity than engine oil; it protects the gears and ensures smooth gear changes. Viscosity is also important because there is no oil pump in the gearbox, and only the lowest gears are immersed in the fluid.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE THE GEARBOX OIL?

There are many conflicting opinions on this subject. Some experts suggest changing it every 70,000 km, others say every hundred thousand, whilst car manufacturers claim that most modern cars do not require an oil change at all.

Unfortunately, however, this oil needs to be changed every approx. 60,000–80,000 kilometres, depending on the driver’s driving style.

Unused gearbox oil should be a pale red colour and should not give off a burnt smell. Grinding noises when changing gears or gears slipping are the main signs of gearbox problems, and the cause may be the use of unsuitable oil or an incorrect amount of it.
